When you look at someone with rose colored glasses meaning

One of my girlfriends is in relationship flux. In discussing and breaking down the specifics and looking at how she got where she is, she told me that her man has totally changed and is so different than she thought. There was a time, that in solidarity I would have reinforced the view from which she stands. You can work on yourself.

When Dating, Take OFF Your Rose Colored Glasses

A University of Toronto study provides the first direct evidence that our mood literally changes the way our visual system filters our perceptual experience suggesting that seeing the world through rose-coloured glasses is more biological reality than metaphor.

The study appears in the Journal of Neuroscience. The U of T team used functional magnetic resonance imaging to examine how our visual cortex processes sensory information when in good, bad, and neutral moods. They found that donning the rose-coloured glasses of a good mood is less about the colour and more about the expansiveness of the view.

The researchers first showed subjects a series images designed to generate a good, bad or neutral mood. When in a bad mood, the subjects did not process the images of places in the surrounding background. However, when viewing the same images in a good mood, they actually took in more information — they saw the central image of the face as well as the surrounding pictures of houses.

The upside of this is that we can see things from a more global, or integrative perspective. The downside is that this can lead to distraction on critical tasks that require narrow focus, such as operating dangerous machinery or airport screening of passenger baggage. Bad moods, on the other hand, may keep us more narrowly focused, preventing us from integrating information outside of our direct attentional focus.

We only see the good, which makes us blind to major flaws and warning signs we might have otherwise noticed. Everyone falls victim to rose-colored glasses at one point or another. Why do we have this blindness to flaws in people we care about when others can see them so clearly? Would love be impossible to find otherwise? For me, I knew it from the beginning.

The researchers recruited 1, participants for five studies and tested how strongly they believed specific positive and negative events could occur to various people they knew — loved ones, friends and acquaintances — or strangers briefly described to them as good or bad people. They found that people were more apt to believe positive events could happen more often to people they like, even when the probability of that event happening was much lower. Similarly, participants viewed the odds of something bad happening — ranging from losing luggage to being diagnosed with cancer to missing an important meeting — to a close friend to be notably less than the actual probability. Researchers then measured how much the good or bad news changed their beliefs about someone by being given another opportunity to suggest how likely they thought the event could happen to each person after being told the actual probability. They found that people were more prone to changing their beliefs about a person when it came to good news, but less likely to budge from their opinion if the given event was bad news.
