Costa Rica's reputation for safe travel is well deserved, and your visit here will likely be problem-free. However, as a woman traveling alone in Costa Rica, there are a few things to keep in mind. Latin American men have an unfortunate reputation for machismo, an exaggerated masculinity that can sometimes seep its way into your vacation. In more traditional or rural areas, many men are unaccustomed to seeing a woman traveling alone, so your solo wanderings may attract unwanted attention: audible hissing, catcalls and piropos, Spanish-language come-ons, are all common. Piropos are best handled with a bit of humor and a thick skin. Don't be surprised if a simple walk down the street elicits calls of "mi amor" my love or sweetheart , "que belleza" how beautiful , or "rica mami" sexy.

Hi there I am a 26yrs old female who be traveling to Costa Rica in July. I just wanted to know how safe it is out there. I've traveled before but this is my first time in Central America. So I'm not sure what to expect. I was also going to take the public bus from Liberia to Nicoya to then Samara. How safe is it all?? Any advise or ideas are much appreciated!

It is safe to travel in Costa Rica. Just use your good common sense and street smarts that you use in Tampa. Riding the public bus is a great way to see the country and also a good cultural immersion since this is how most people of Costa Rica get around. This might help you: www. For most bus routes, you will pay the driver in colones. Don't put anything in the overhead bin. Many buses have a storage compartment underneath where you can put your luggage and they will usually give you a ticket for that.

If you are going to be riding the buses a lot, you might consider using a money belt for your cash, cards, passport and driver's license. Sadly, tourists are sometimes targets of pickpockets, just like anywhere else. Stay on the Pacific side of Costa Rica Embassy has placed travel advisory for U.

Citizens on the Caribbean side Don't be daft, James. Hundreds of thousands of people travel to the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica every year without a single problem except maybe sunburn. There have been great strides recently in the area of crime fighting on the Caribbean coast including an increased presence of tourist police and a strong working relationship between local people and businesses and the police. If one tourist a year is murdered on the Caribbean coast out of the , or so who visit yearly , that's about like Chicago.

So let's not go there! Embassy sent out about two weeks ago I am posting this to the 26 year old lady traveling alone in Costa Rica.. I understand that, James, but really the people who live here are probably a better source of information than the US State Department. Does she need to be careful? Which I already wrote, I think. It doesn't mean she should avoid the whole area.

Hey James just out of curosity what's the link? I always look up travel warnings but didn't find anything on Costa. Thanks Hattie for your feedback How is the city of Liberia there?? The city of Liberia is a commercial center and good for shopping and banking, etc. As for safety, I've been there many times and never had a problem and never heard of much crime going on there. But I have also witnessed a shooting there in a crowded downtown at dusk with my own eyes. Liberia is the center of everything for the farming ares around it.. A couple of good restaurants and hotels. Thanks for calling me "immoral," MickeyMoose.

It makes me feel a bit more racy like a walk on the wild side. Unless you count some unscrupulous rental car agencies, of course. You are lumping together "crimes against tourists" and "crimes against residents" which are pretty much two different things. In addition, the crime situation is not the same all over Costa Rica -- just like in Tampa.

There are many areas where there is little crime and few bars and no razor wire. Just because you live in an area where this exists, doesn't mean it's that way everywhere. I don't consider those statements a "whitewash. After living here for many years, I can honestly say I have not been a victim of a crime either in my hometown or while traveling around Costa Rica. I was the victim of a pickpocket once on the bus. Log in to get trip updates and message other travelers. Female traveling alone to Costa Rica.
